About the Department

Psychiatry has come up as one of the most dynamic branches of medicine in recent years. In recent years the scope of Psychiatry has enlarged considerably with wide ranging influences from Sociology, Anthropology and Philosophy on the one hand and Neurology and Medicine on other hand. Mental Health issues are often stigmatised in India, leading to many not seeking help. “Our National Mental Health Survey, 2016 found that close to 14 percent of India’s population required active mental health interventions. So it is causing lot of burden not only on the individual but also on the family and society. Community is in dire need of Psychiatrists with Holistic Perspective.

Psychiatry is the branch of medicine that deals with the causation, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of mental and behavioural disorders. It also deals with rehabilitation. It takes into account the biological, psychological and social/cultural perspectives of the disease.

  2. Homoeopathic graduates are admitted into PG course through AIAPGET (All India AYUSH Post Graduate Entrance Test)

The main aim of the course is to train the students in the field of Psychiatry and to treat the psychiatric patients in accordance with the principles of Homoeopathy.

Activities in the Department Of Psychiatry:

  • PG students are posted to the INSTITUTE OF MENTAL HEALTH (IMH) Erragadda for Training (a government teaching hospital for allopathic post graduates) and they are also posted to NIMH (National Institute of Mental Health), Bowenpally for clinical training.
  • Visit to various National wide Institutes of Mental Health like NHRIMH (National Homoeopathic Research Institute of Mental Health, Kottayam, Kerala).
  • The students are provided with audio-visual equipment like an LCD projector for teaching and presentations. They also have numerous structured discussions, seminars, clinical meetings and journal clubs.
  • They have general and departmental libraries through which they have wide range of national and international journals and various national and international books on Psychiatry.
  • The students are also exposed to the specialists in the field to improve their knowledge. The department encourages students to participate in state level, national and international level conferences and seminars.
  • PG students also has teaching programme in the subject of Psychiatry for final year UG students.
  • PG students have daily clinical exposure in IPD (In patient Department) and OPD (Out Patients Department).
  • Detailed study on mind rubrics in various repertories and other books.
  • Psychiatric Disorders like Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Panic Disorder, Social Anxiety Disorder, Mood Disorders(Depression, Bipolar), Posttraumatic stress disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Alcohol Use Disorder, Substance Abuse like Cannabis, Delusion Disorder, Conduct Disorder, Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD in children, Learning Disorders, Sexual Disorders, Schizophrenia, Insomnia, Dementia, Phobic Disorders etc., are common in our OPD.
  • Psychiatrists ideally evaluate patients from a biopsychosocial perspective before prescribing the treatment. Various improved methods of prescribing along with counselling (psychotherapy) will be taught.
  • Many people are utilizing our Psychiatry department services and the number of patients is increasing day by day because of the successful treatment in Psychiatric Disorders.
